AS IN-HOUSE CHIEF
Winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1988)
o In addition to receiving the Nobel Prize, Dr. Michel has received various prestigious awards
including the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, which
is the highest honor awarded in German research.
o He also received the Bijvoet Medal at the Bijvoet Center for Biomolecular Research of Utrecht
University in 1989, became a foreign member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and
Sciences in 1995 and was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 2005.
o Since 1987 he has been the Director of the Molecular Membrane Biology Department at the Max
Planck Institute for Biophysics in Frankfurt, Germany, and Professor of Bio-Chemistry at the
Dr. Hartmut Michel
Goethe University Frankfurt.
