GCSE is an academic qualification verifying that students have passed 7 7
the required subjects. Students usually take the GCSE test before completing
the compulsory schooling (Year11). In England, Wales, and Northern Ireland,
students in year 9 (ages 13-14) can individually choose to enroll in any subject
of GCSE that they want. In year 10 (ages 14-15), students will be studying in
the selected subjects. Later in year 11 (ages 15-16), students will have to sit
for a GCSE test.
Students have to be tested around 8-12 subjects, including science,
English language, mathematics, social studies, foreing languages, art, etc. The
test results are divided into 7 levels, ranging from grade A, B, C, D, E, F, and
G. Students have to get at least grade C or above in order to pass the subject.
In the present, the grade scale of the GCSE test in the U.K. has been
changed from grade A+ - G to on a 9-point scale, using numbers from 9 to
1. Within the next 2 years, every subject test in the GCSE will use the 9-point
grade scale.
