Just over 8,500 kilometers from England, high up on the Shan
Plateau, is this park modeled after London’s Royal Kew Gardens,
which can cause some confusion for visitors. Carved out and
planted originally in 1915 by Turkish prisoners of the First World
War under the supervision of Forest Reserve Officer Alex Roger
and the botanist Lady Cuffe, today this national reserve protects as
many as 435 acres. Set to the south of Pyin Oo Lwin’s city center
around Kandwaygi Lake, the gardens comprise as many as 480
different species of flowers, shrubs and trees, including orchids,
dahlias and roses as well as exotic fruit. The exterior stairway of the
Chinese, rocket-shaped Nan Myint Tower offers spectacular views
