Considered the largest tropical garden in Southeast Asia, this nearly 700-
acre complex is today home to a vast array of botanical species. A family
enterprise started in 1954 as a fruit plantation, its transformation was
inspired by a trip to Europe by Mrs. Nongnooch, after which she opened her
gardens to the public in 1980. Over the years, it has grown into a collection
of 30 themed gardens, like the French Garden, recreating the greenery of
Versailles, or Stonehenge, modelled after the prehistoric ruins in England.
From its start, conservation and preservation of rare species have been
foremost in this development, and so visitors are treated to some of the
rarest flora. In cooperation with the International Union for the Conservation
of Nature, Suan Nong Nooch can now boast one of the largest collections
of Cycads, a species of trees that live hundreds of years and date back to
the Triassic and Jurassic periods. There are also daily Cultural and Elephant
shows. To get around, there are covered walkways, bikes for rent and a
tourist shuttle bus.
