Waterways have always been at the heart of Thai culture, and a visit
to Baan Krasae Bon, set along the banks of the Prasae River is an
ideal location to experience this. A cruise on the river amidst a few
wisps of water hyacinths floating with the currents and frolicking Indochinese water dragons,
similar to South American iguanas, tiptoeing in the branches along the shores are a welcoming
sight. Then, take a ride on the side car of a motorcycle through the village orchards and groves
under the shade of towering fruit trees, durian, mangostene and rambuttan. After that, it can be
a riverside “barefoot lunch” of fresh charcoal-broiled fish and seafood, stir-fried home grown
greens and rice, a great way to join this traditional life that hasn’t changed much except for the
addition of electricity and small motors to replace gas lanterns, water buffalo-drawn wagons and
paddled dugouts, in this village dating back more than 400 years. It’s truly a great way to step
into Thai rural life.
