FOLLOWING A ROUTE
OF SPIRITUALITY AND CULTURE
Introduction
Today, it’s called National Route 12, traversing Thailand from Mukdaharn,
set along the mighty Mekong River that forms the country’s border with
the Lao People’s Democratic Republic to the east, and Mae Sot, Tak, the
Gateway to Myanmar, crossing the Bridge over the Moie River. After this,
the route travels first southwest to the former capital Yangon and then to
Mandalay in north central Myanmar before turning northeast onto the Shan
Plateau following National Highway 3.
In the past, the people made their way back and forth across the two rivers.
There were no distinct borders or paths. Movement was slow but fluid,
and as they traveled and traded, they brought with them their beliefs and
customs which they shared. While Buddhist dharma came east, this route
returns from whence these teachings came, unveiling magnificent ancient
kingdoms, their temples and pagodas. Along the way, there are those
holding on to the lifestyles and livelihoods of their ancestors. The scenery
is also ageless and spectacular, contributing to making this trip one that will
both arouse and sooth one’s spirit.
