Remembering
Professor
Bhanupong,
With Respect
and Affection

I knew Professor Bhanupong, affectionately known as Prof. Pha or Prof. P, as a fellow
member of the Faculty of Economics of Thammasat University. He earned widespread recognition
as a capable administrator at both faculty and university levels and as an excellent professor of
macroeconomics and monetary economics.
Beyond his academic accolades, Prof. Pha embodied brotherly warmth and friendship. He
generously shared his knowledge and guidance with me and even mentored my son, who had the
privilege of being his student in EE460. I was deeply grateful to have known a man who truly
lived up to the Buddhist ideal of a “graduate” – someone of genuine goodness, not just academic
achievement.
Our paths diverged when I retired before Prof. Pha continued his dedication to teaching.
In May 2023, while on a trip abroad with my daughter, I had a peculiar dream. Though I hadn’t
thought of him recently, Prof. Pha appeared, radiating cheer and greeting me warmly. The dream
lingered in my mind, and upon return, I learned from my sister that he was unwell.
With profound sadness, we learned of Prof. Pha’s passing in May 2023, just two years after my
own husband’s passing in 2021.
Though physically gone, Prof. Pha’s kindness and benevolence will forever remain etched
in our hearts. I have unwavering faith that his accumulated merits will bring him true happiness
and enlightenment. As a heartfelt tribute, I offer a verse dedicated to his memory:
