the way, she honored me with the designation of “Editor” of the book. Hopefully, the
book has taken a form that has met the expectations of Divina, and the many friends
and admirers of Bhanupong.
Working on this book has given me two wonderful experiences. First, my appreciation
and understanding of my friend Bhanupong have been widened and deepened by
reading the varied pieces written by those who knew and loved him. The recurring
mentions of his humility, humanity, and dedication to teaching and learning only
reinforced my positive estimations of him. However, his more tender side of devotion
to family, sacrifice, grit in the face of suffering, and the wonderful love shared with
Divina that enabled them to enjoy the sunshine, and withstand the storms in life, was
an utterly uplifting revelation to me. Had I been aware of this side, there would have
been far more satisfying areas to discuss and share than academics, politics, or jokes!
Second, Divina and I began as strangers united for a common purpose. As we
progressed, the purpose took on a new meaning, as Divina became a friend, and the
project became more personal. As the book neared completion, I wrote to Divina: “…
it has been a real joy working with you on this book project. I am happy you trusted me
enough to take me on board, despite knowing nothing about me prior to this. Perhaps
someday we will meet. Yet, in a strange way, there is something very special about
having a friend you have never met.”
In closing, let me reiterate that this book is Divina’s labor of love; I merely served as
a sounding board.
