At another of these clusters of bucolic households, family women will
be seen sitting around a table cutting the thinnest, almost translucent
slices of tiny Chek Nam Va Siam, or Thai Pisang Awak bananas.
There’ll be a container filled with small knives in the center of the table.
It’s the men’s job to keep the blades razor sharp. As the women cut,
they lay out each banana slice on a bamboo-woven sheet of 50 to
100 cm. which will be set out to dry in the sun, after which the slices
are bagged and sold as sweet, chewy treats. Ten sheets cost two US
dollars and three women can produce about 100 a day. Most visitors
like to try their hand at slicing the Chek Nam Va Siam before buying
some to take with them to nibble on as they continue their sojourn.
