NEARBY Then, while traveling through the orchards in a sidecar with benches
attached to a motorbike, guests have the chance to stop and try some of
the ripe produce. Still, any time of year, the tour can be quite enlightening.
ATTRACTIONS The buzzing you’ll hear are the many hives of bees that help pollinate the
flowering buds, and while the scents are sweet, so is the honey that can
be collected. The community also produces a variety of eco-friendly
products, including a line of natural cosmetics that are becoming quite
popular.

Heading north from the city, the first district you come to is Makham,
famous for its tamarind from which it gets its name. Down one of
the lanes off the main road, you’ll come to the community of Patavi,
comprising nine orchards practicing organic gardening as they
follow the precepts of the late king’s sufficiency economy. Visitors
are more than welcome, and at the Learning Center, under the
guidance of Khun Ratthai Phonsakti along with other community
members, people are taught the methods for their trees to bear the
sweetest and healthiest durian, mangosteen, rambutan, langsat,
sapodilla, and salaka, or snake fruit. The best time to come is of
course during the fruit season.
