About six kilometers from town is one of the province’s
last remaining gem mines at Khao Phloi Waen, Ring Gem
Mountain. Here, you can learn every stage in the gem
process from hydro excavation to the finished product.
Khun Samran at his Center for Graduate and Resources
of Gemstone Jewelry Rings will teach you everything, but
you better dress appropriately and be ready to get dirty
when you sift through the stones to find a little treasure,
a rough sapphire or ruby. Who knows? After some
instruction in gem classification, you should be able to
pick up a few gems, at least in local wisdom.
