Today, while much quieter, it’s heritage has been coming back to life. Many
of the century-old, wooden Sino-European row houses have been restored
and transformed into cozy cafes and noodle shops, attractive galleries and
tiny boutiques. Behind carved pillars and intricate woodwork, their louvered
shutters and bi-folded doors open to wonderful patterned tile floors, warm,
dark wood interiors with antique furnishings and delightful knick-knacks,
fashion and tasty treats.
At the northern end, overlooking the 1-kilometer lane hugging the river bank
th
is the 19 century ordination hall of Wat Bot Muang with its gold-painted
chedi that as night descends creates a magical ambience with its reflection
shimmering on the river. This is further enhanced by the soft hue created by
lampposts with golden depictions of the mythological Kinnaree lining the
quaint walking street.
At the southern end is the Chanthaboon Learning House that offers an
interesting exhibit of old photographs of the area as well as paintings and
architectural drawings. While the upstairs balcony offers a great view of this
charismatic community, there is a pretty garden down below where visitors
can reflect on what they have observed.
