CHANTHABURI

    City of the Moon

Chanthaburi, which takes its name from the Thai word for moon, chan, is a
very tranquil province stretching north from coastal alluvial plains nourished
by waters flowing down from the mountainous interior. Recording some of
the highest annual rainfall of the country, it produces what is considered
by many to be the best tasting fruit, especially durian, mangosteen
and rambutan. In the past, these mountains also yielded rich finds of
precious gems, sapphires and rubies. Meanwhile, nestled along the coast,
Chanthaburi offers some of Thailand’s most savory seafood.

Chanthaburi boasts a long and proud history. Ancient annals talk about
the Chong coming and settling here along with other migrants coming by
land and by water. Over 250 years ago, King Taksin came to recruit troops
to enlarge his forces to defeat the Burmese that had usurped the Thai
kingdom. Bordering Cambodia to the east, Chanthaburi fell for a time under
the yoke of the French after it colonized Indochina, which also brought a
wave of Vietnamese refugees. Even before this, Catholic Vietnamese had
run to Chanthaburi to escape religious persecution in Cochin China. A third
wave came when their country fell to the Communists. The influence of this
past is clearly evident as one explores the city and outlying districts.
