Just across the Nan River from Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat,
or Wat Yai, is the Wang Chan Palace complex that includes the
King Naresuan Shrine and the ruins of three temples. It actually
took some convincing for the school, Pitsanulok Phittayakorn,
to move so the Department of Fine Arts could begin excavating
                                                             th
this royal residence built in the first half of the 15 century for
the kings of Ayutthhaya. From a distance, much of it appears
as just low piles of brick rubble, but when standing among
their midst, it isn’t hard to imagine how extensive this complex
once was or how the Burmese demolished this once glorious
capital as they did 200 years later to Ayutthaya.
