If you look east from Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat, not far off, you
will see the main chedi, or stupa, of Wat Ratchaburana. Built during the
reign of Sukhothai and added to over the years, it offers an interesting
perspective of the history of Siam. As visitors enter the monastery
grounds, the 9-room sanctuary with its three-tiered roof grabs their
attention. Inside the main hall with its laterite columns are murals painted
under the direction of King Rama IV. Once faded, they have been restored
by the Fine Arts Department, which it is hoped will be the case for those
in the Ubosot, depicting the Ramayana, next to the Tripitika Hall. Here,
in the Sermon Hall, behind its beautifully carved wooden doors, is also a
small museum with the barge that King Rama V rode in when he visited
the province. It is said that those who walk under the craft will experience
good fortune in the remaining years of their life.
