Next along Highway 12 is the province and provincial capital of Sukhothai.
The landscape is quite verdant and golden as the rice ripens. The city itself is
quite quiet, a central market to serve the rural communities and then hotels,
shops and restaurants for visitors who have come to explore the historical
parks of Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai. Until one reaches the ancient city,
it can be quite hard to imagine that this area is considered the cradle of
Thai civilization, the birthplace of the first Thai renaissance, the roots of
the written Thai language, Thai art and architecture. Still, Sukhothai town
permeates with the slow, gentleness of Thai culture, less influenced by the
hustle and bustle of modern city living. It’s a perfect place to prepare for
your visits into Thailand’s past and from which many of the Thai traditions
still practiced today were inspired.
