WHAT TO DO Less visited and reconstructed, the ruins do cater to visitors cycling between
temples, Buddha images and palace buildings under lush canopied lanes.
Some of the more impressive sites include Wat Chang Lom with its distinctive
AND SEE Sri Lankan style surrounded by sculptures of elephants, Wat Chedi Jet
Thaew surrounded by seven rows of small stupas, just as its name says,
and Wat Nang Phaya, a temple built during the reign of Ayuttaha after it had
replaced Sukhothai as the Thai capital in the sixteenth century and taken Si
Sachanalai from the Lanna kingdom to the north.

Approximately 55 kilometers north of Sukhothai on the east bank of
the Yom River and guarded by two hills is Si Sachanalai Historical
Park, the second city of the Sukhothai kingdom. As you cross the
suspension bridge to enter the town, you’ll be greeted by an even
older Khmer-style prang at Wat Phra Si Rattana, a remnant from
when the city was known as Chaliang and served as a Khmer
outpost and trading hub between the Chinese and Khmer back in
the 11th century. As the sister city of Sukhothai, it served as the
residence for the crown prince.
