The cotton fabrics hand woven by the ancestors of the first Thai-Phuan
who migrated from Loas or the northeast of Thailand to Sukhothai
province more than 80 years ago are vibrantly colorful. This could
be because the daughter, Khun Mod, of the center’s namesake
and principal weaver, Khun Suntree, has taken the nine Thai-Phuan
traditional patterns and turned them into very elaborate, flamboyant,
abstract cloths to produce a collection of contemporary clothing
and accessories. The cooperative of village woman who staff the
center all practice the traditional “tin chok” method, which requires
delicate weaving of individual threads using porcupine quills. To get
to this point, after the cotton is picked, it must be cleaned, dyed
and spun, and visitors are treated to a display of each step of the
process. Once they have seen how much work goes into each piece
of fabric, they can select items for themselves and gifts from the
beautiful fabrics and fashions on display in the showroom.
