Our
Humble Neighbor,
Ajarn Bhanupong
Lucia Sukhanenya

Although our paths crossed only occasionally, Ajarn Bhanupong left a lasting impression as
a kind and caring neighbor. Despite his busy schedule, I sometimes glimpsed him taking his wife,
Divina, for walks to strengthen her leg. We would also exchange friendly greetings on Sundays
as he and Divina headed to church, our schedules mirroring each other’s.
The devastating flood sadly made Ajarn and Divina move away from our community as
they relocated to Bangkok. During our brief interactions, Ajarn’s warmth, joy, and attentiveness
to Divina’s disability were ever-present. His passing brought immense sadness, and it was only
during his hospitalization that we learned of his esteemed position as Dean of the Faculty of
Economics at Thammasat University. This revelation came as a surprise, as his down-to-earth
demeanor never hinted at such an accomplishment.
Ajarn Bhanupong will forever hold a place in our memories as a neighbor who embodied kindness
and humility, reminding us that true greatness often lies in the simplest interactions.
