His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great graciously provided royal guidance
on water management around Suvarnabhumi Airport. The airport’s construction reduced
the water catchment area by more than 20,000 rai. Consequently, cooperation was
established with the Royal Irrigation Department to manage the surrounding areas of
the airport effectively. Measures included the construction of levees, drainage canals,
canal roads, pumping stations, and floodgates, as well as the adoption of hydrological
telemetry systems. These initiatives not only improved water drainage around Suvar-
nabhumi Airport but also helped alleviate flooding in Bangkok and the eastern Chao
Phraya River Basin. Additionally, they created water reserves for agricultural use in the
dry season and helped reduce traffic congestion in Samut Prakan Province through the
construction of canal-side roads.
