Treasured Moments
with Bhanu,
My Brother-in-Law

The most vivid memory I have of Bhanu is his unwavering love for Divina. When they
married, my mother, like many others, had doubts. She worried their union wouldn’t withstand
the test of time, envisioning a day when Divina, known for her selectivity, would return to the
Philippines. How wrong we all were.
The day they left for Bangkok, following Filipino custom, we saw them off at the airport.
Bhanu, apprehensive that Divina might change her mind amidst our tears, nervously pleaded with
us, his sisters-in-law and friends, not to cry. It was a humorous request, but it spoke volumes of
his caring nature.
Bhanu’s generosity was another remarkable trait. He readily offered financial assistance to
my parents and brother when they fell ill, and his support continued until their passing. This act
of selflessness was particularly meaningful considering he wasn’t Filipino.
His generosity extended beyond finances. Despite the distance, he’d always surprise us with
gifts from his travels: t-shirts, umbrellas, even a Japanese calendar – especially after his frequent
trips to Japan.
During our visit to Bangkok, Bhanu proudly showcased his city and culture. He toured us
through stunning locations like the Bang Pa-in Palace, the Teak Palace, the floating restaurant
on the Chao Phraya River, and the revered Emerald Temple. His enthusiasm for sharing Thai
culture and cuisine was infectious.
