Another attraction that makes its home on the banks of the Bueng Phra
Mahathat Kaen Nakhon is the Khon Kaen Museum. Hong Moon Mung, in
the northeastern, Thai-I-san dialect, means Hall of Treasures, and this is
what you will certainly discover here. The exhibits, divided into five zones,
date back to the Jurassic period and prehistoric times, with pottery from
the Ban Chiang era. There is also an intricately carved Bai Sema, temple
boundary marker depicting Princess Pimpa cleaning the feet of the Buddha
that dates backs to the Mon Dvaravati Kingdom when Buddhism was first
introduced to Thailand during the sixth to eleventh century. Other displays
present the history, heritage and life then and now of Khon Kaen through
absorbing multimedia displays, dioramas of household and village life and
wax figures performing traditional chores and ceremonies in the clothing,
or costumes, of their ethnic roots. It’s a great introduction to Khon Kaen
and I-san culture.
