Axle Counter as the superior system in train detection technology
A modern axle counting system provides information on whether a defined track section is "free"
or "occupied". However, current axle counting systems can contribute much more to an efficient
and smooth railway operation, for instance, efficient maintenance planning resulting in low life
cycle costs to name one out of many benefits of modern train detection systems.
The primary focus is on the benefits of modern axle counting systems compared to track circuits.
The future improvements due to modern Axle Counters
Track vacancy detection based on axle counting is an integral part of a signalling system (e.g.
interlocking, level crossing, EOW, etc.). As you can read on the following pages, a modern axle
counting system can completely replace track circuit technology and also provide additional
information to system integrators and operators.
Axle Counting Systems by Frauscher comprises two parts: The trackside equipment consists of
a reliable wheel sensor only. There is no need of electronics near track being directly exposed to
environmental impact (e.g. no trackside electronics required in the connection box) – the flexible
and space-saving indoor equipment houses innovative electronics boards. In countries like
Thailand, all outdoor components have to withstand extreme conditions as they, for instance,
occur in the rainy season. Even flooded track does not hinder to continue the railway operation.
