Samsen Canal has been an important canal since the Ayutthaya period. Branching from the Chao Phraya River
on the Phra Nakhon side, it flows through Dusit, Phaya Thai, Ratchathewi, and Din Daeng districts, before
converging with Saen Saep Canal in Huai Khwang District. During the reign of King Rama V, the Samsen area
experienced substantial growth, marked by the emergence of Western-influenced architecture integrated
with local craftsmanship. The area became the location of important sites, including temples, palaces, and
government agencies, as well as multicultural communities that have preserved their ways of life and cultural
traditions to the present day.
Currently, Samsen Canal faces challenges related to water pollution and canal encroachment. In response,
the City Planning and Urban Development Department has implemented the project for consultancy
services in surveying and detailed designs for the landscape improvement of Samsen Canal through a
participatory process with the objective of developing Samsen Canal as a model urban canal that is clean,
attractive, vibrant, aligned with the surrounding community’s way of life.
